Going back and exploring the fascinating history of Australia through rare and stunning vintage photographs of Australia's state capital cities and many other lesser-known country and coastal townships. We dive into a time when transport links were being developed, exploring the customs, architecture and landscapes that helped develop the country we know today. A unique visual journey of Australia through the early lens. Early Australian towns were built around shipping ports. New areas had to be settled to facilitate farming, and the evolution of the railways and the discovery of gold further transformed our early towns and cities. Early Railways Australia Railways in Australia date from the 10 December 1831 when the Australian Agricultural Company officially opened Australia's first railway, located at the intersection of Brown and Church Streets, Newcastle, New South Wales. Privately owned and operated to service the A Pit coal mine, it was a cast iron fishbelly rail on an inclined plane as a gravitational railway. The colonial railways were built to three different gauges, which became a problem once lines of different systems met at Albury in 1881 and Wallangarra in 1888. In the 20th century, the lines between major cities were converted to standard gauge and electrified suburban networks were built in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. In the second half of the 20th century, many rural branch lines were closed to passenger traffic or altogether in all states. On the other hand, long heavy-haul railways were built to transport iron ore in Western Australia and coal in Queensland to ports. In Western Australia these railways are privately owned. Colonial Transport Australia During the mid-nineteenth century, and most notably in Western cultures, steamships and steamboats became one of the most prominent forms of transportation. This travel revolution took place on a global scale, as travel via steamship allowed goods and people to be transported at a fraction of the time that it took to sail. Prior to the introduction of the steamship, the most common forms of transportation were fueled by man, wind, and horsepower. However, each of these modes had their own flaws and drawbacks. Often the only way to travel between major ports and centres was by ship and Coastal ships were the ‘backbone’ of Australian trade. The first paddle steamer was the “Sophia Jane” which was used between Sydney and the Hunter River in 1831. By 1837, steamships began to operate longer coastal voyages – Sydney to Melbourne and Brisbane. Hosre-drawn Vehicles: Horse-drawn vehicles are synonymous with Australia's history. From the Cobb & Co Coach and the ‘Sydney’ sulky to the bullock dray, horse-drawn vehicles have contributed significantly to Australia’s advancement.
