Bush met Hungarian dignitaries on Thursday at the start of his official visit to Budapest. Bush, who arrived late Wednesday, is the first American head of state to set foot in the country for nearly two decades. Bush and his wife, Laura, were welcomed by Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom and his wife, Erzsebet at Solyom's offices at Sandor Palace in the ornate Buda section of the city. A military band played both anthems. In Budapest, Bush's focus will be bilateral - and is expected to touch on Hungary as a role model for other European countries still struggling to adopt full democratic norms and Western style economies. His itinerary for Thursday's visit, which will last less than a day, is not as agenda-laden as that of his previous stop in Austria, where he met with European Union leaders for talks ranging from the Iran nuclear standoff, the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, to ways on reducing the West's foreign energy dependence.
