Guitar tone capacitor test ....we grabbed a bunch of old tone capacitors and set up a test rig to give them a listen. Motor City A2 Pickups, prs hard tail, voxac4tv amp, gibson bumblebee sprague difilm 160p cap .02 We don't sell caps and are NOT SELLING anything ... this is merely a suggested test procedure that has helped us audition and pick winning caps. Farads do not have a sound. However, tolerances vary and materials and construction have changed significantly over the years. Do some reading of old capacitor spec sheets. They were always trumpeting new specs with lower esr, ringover, and inductance. An old style foil construction cap has a significantly higher rating on all of these "negative quailties" even though it might be .02 on the button! Modern caps use metal conductors sprayed onto mylar strips and have much lower inductance ESR and ring-over. I would advocate that as guitarists we like the caps that have those negative qualities. Pursuing these "negative attributes" has led directly to better sounding tone controls in my own guitars and amps. Look up any capacitor spec sheet and the first headline line will be "lower ESR" or "New NON-INDUCTIVE WIND" .....
