Here’s the process. First….after the pad site has been cleared….about an acre…and the mud pit dug out, they drill a six foot square hole and install a 2x12 wooden frame for support. At the same time, they line the mud pit with a plastic seal. This keeps all the drilling mud contained. Next, a small drilling rig puts the first bit in the ground in that 6x6 hole….and proceeds to stir up a total….dusty…mess. This hole is drilled to 40 feet, then re-drilled with a wider bit …. and then the first section of casing is lowered into the hole and cemented in place.
