Join us for the 2026 Burtenshaw Lecture at Washington State University, where Charles Finkel reflects on more than six decades shaping the modern wine and craft beer industries. From helping build Château Ste. Michelle into a national name, to founding Merchant du Vin and introducing traditional European breweries to American drinkers, Finkel has been at the center of some of the most important shifts in beverage history. He later founded Pike Place Brewery in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, helping fuel a movement that grew from just two U.S. craft breweries in 1978 to more than 10,000 today. In this wide-ranging talk, Finkel shares: How immigration and family history shaped his path Why hospitality is ultimately about people The evolution of American wine after Prohibition The rise of craft brewing in the United States Lessons in leadership, humility, and management Charles is a designer, importer, entrepreneur, and historian currently writing A Brief History of Beer in the Last 10,000 Years, offering both industry insight and deeply personal perspective on a life devoted to wine, beer, and hospitality.
