Statue of soldiers STORYLINE US, Chinese and North Korean war veterans joined leader Kim Jong Un at an event marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. Kim and top military officials laid a wreath on Thursday at a memorial to war veterans at a new cemetery in Pyongyang's outskirts. The event marks the start of official commemorations in North Korea for the upcoming milestone war anniversary on Saturday. Amongst those who attended the ceremony was US veteran Thomas Hudner, a former US Navy pilot. Hudner arrived in North Korea as he attempts to find the remains of a fellow pilot who perished after being shot down in the conflict. "Well it's a very emotional occasion to be here with so many veterans - not only the veterans but also the people of the nation who turned out to show their support to all of veterans," he said at the ceremony. "As an American veteran, I am delighted to see that our former foe and we share some of the same feelings about this. So it is great to be here," he added. North Korean war veteran Ri Geng Hung encouraged the younger generation to learn from their senior counterparts. "Like we did in 1950's, we veterans want to pass on the spirit to fight for the Fatherland to our younger generations," said Geng Hung. Earlier in the week, North Korea unveiled a new mass games performance with a Korean War theme and is expected to hold a military parade on Saturday. The three-year conflict ended in a truce on July 27, 1953, but is still called "Victory Day" in North Korea. Commemorations also are taking place in South Korea.
