It was the first federal penitentiary in Western Canada and housed inmates of varying security levels. Known for its imposing architecture and harsh conditions, the prison played a significant role in Canadian corrections history. Over the years, it saw riots, escapes, and reforms reflecting changing attitudes toward incarceration. After its closure, the site was redeveloped into residential and commercial spaces, with some original structures preserved as historical landmarks.
