In 1887, Tongariro became the first national park in New Zealand. Just over a century later, the park was awarded dual UNESCO World Heritage designation for its exceptional natural qualities as well as its cultural value to Māori. Showcasing volcanic treasures including green lakes, aged lava flows, steaming craters, colorful silica terraces, and unusual alpine gardens, the 80,000-hectare park is evidence of the artistic genius of nature. Three active volcanoes: Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro define the southern boundaries of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, the horseshoe-shaped sequence of events occurring in the Pacific Ocean known as the "Ring of Fire." A full-day adventure, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing will pay you with hot vents, lunar settings, and vivid crater lakes. If you're looking for a shorter trip, explore the Taranaki Falls circle route for breathtaking mountain views, peaceful streams, rich woods and tumbling waterfalls. The biggest ski resorts in Tongariro National Park provide up to 44 km of slopes throughout winter (Whakapapa – Mt. Ruapehu). From 2,322 meters, the top ski resorts in Tongariro National Park reach for skiing.
