In 1988 he became the youngest man to win a match at the U.S. Open. In 1987 he became the youngest to win the U.S. boys 18-and-under championships... "He has the head of a champion," said his coach, Jose Higueras. Ranked 18th in the world before this tournament, Chang plays with a two-fisted backhand and has strong baseline strokes, but little else in his game suggested he was capable of winning here at such a tender age. He is noted for his will and durability, however, with a 4-1 career record in five-set matches. He has a 21-5 mark this year.
