174 Years Later — We Remember Every year on 26 February, the Overstrand community gathers at sea to honour the lives lost in the tragic sinking of the HMS Birkenhead off Danger Point. In the early hours of 26 February 1852, more than 600 souls were aboard when the ship struck an uncharted rock. Only 193 survived. From this tragedy came the “Birkenhead Drill” — the principle of women and children first — a legacy of discipline and courage that shaped maritime history. This year, 174 years later, three Marine Dynamics vessels returned to the exact site above Birkenhead Rock. Engines were switched off. Seaweed wreaths, handcrafted by our team, were gently laid upon the ocean. Orange flares marked the moment. Silence fell across the water. Reverend James Gray shared the story of that night, and the hymn For Those in Peril on the Sea echoed across the waves — a moving tribute to those who never returned home. As our CEO, Wilfred Chivell, reminds us: “The yearly Birkenhead Commemoration is about honouring bravery and ensuring that the story is not forgotten. It is also a reminder to all of us who work at sea every day that the ocean must be respected.” Lest we forget. #Birkenhead174 #MarineDynamics #Gansbaai #MaritimeHistory #WomenAndChildrenFirst
