Water Crisis Threat Looms Over Gulf Amid Iran–Israel–United States War

Amid the escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States, a new and potentially devastating crisis could be looming over the Gulf region — water security. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain sit on trillions of dollars worth of oil and natural gas reserves in the Persian Gulf. But one critical resource remains scarce — freshwater. Most Gulf countries have little to no natural freshwater sources and depend heavily on desalination plants, which convert seawater into drinking water. Across the region, nearly 450 desalination plants supply water to millions. Countries like Kuwait get about 90% of their drinking water from desalination, while Oman relies on 86%, and Saudi Arabia on around 70%. Since the 1970s, Gulf nations have invested their oil wealth into desalination infrastructure, making these facilities the lifeline of the Arabian Peninsula. In many ways, the region literally manufactures its drinking water from the sea using electricity. Experts warn that if the conflict expands and desalination plants become targets, the consequences could be catastrophic. Even a single drone strike on one facility could leave millions without water. So far, Iran has not targeted desalination plants, but analysts believe such infrastructure could become a strategic bargaining chip in the conflict.
