A disturbing statistic makes it clear that the racism inherent in marijuana law is alive and well in the Big Apple. In New York City, 87% of those arrested for pot offences are either black or Hispanic. However, New York State Senator, Liz Krueger will introduce a bill in the 2015 legislative session to address this injustice. Krueger’s staff told reporters that she is motivated by the unfairness of the existing law and how it’s being interpreted. And, certain communities, especially those populated by people of color, in New York City are being incarcerated in far higher numbers than those in wealthier, whiter communities. The bill would allow the recreational use of small amounts of pot for citizens age 21 and up, and for weed to be regulated by the state liquor authority. Encouraging as this is, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly said he will not support the legalization of recreational weed in his state. So, New Yorkers may not be making Big Apple pipes anytime soon. Although thousands of G.I.’s deal with the stress of war by smoking marijuana, the U.S. military has never been very keen on their soldiers partaking of the herb. Alternatively, according to the Italian newspaper LaStampa Cronache, the Italian army has a more enlightened attitude toward weed. In fact, their soldiers’ latest mission is to cultivate cannabis. Medical marijuana has been legal in Italy for decades, but it’s illegal to privately grow it, so the government has decided to use it’s military manpower in a positive way and grow weed for their doctors to prescribe. Along with this bold approach, the Italian government will also be releasing about 10,000 inmates from prison who have been incarcerated due to antiquated laws regarding marijuana possession. Viva L’Italia. Meanwhile, in the Sunshine State, the anti-marijuana brigade is prepared to spend millions of dollars to prevent Floridians from getting the medicine they require. Drug Free Florida will spend $1.6 million in the first week of October alone campaigning against new marijuana legislation. However, United For Care’s campaign manager Ben Pollara is not too concerned. “When your basic position runs completely counter to public opinion, millions in misleading advertising is the only strategy available,” Pollara said. “But no amount of advertising can overwhelm the basic facts.” What do you think? Are marijuana laws racist? Should the U.S. follow Italy’s lead? Comment below and let us know. Thanks for watching 420 Today. And, don’t forget to subscribe…
