(9 May 2017) LEADIN: Three hundred soldiers graduated on Tuesday from a military college in Baghdad to become officers in the Iraqi army. STORYLINE: Dress uniforms, flags and the regimented beats of a military band accompany 300 graduating military officers. The graduation ceremony takes place at the Al Rustamiya college with a parade and demonstration of military training. Most of them will now be deployed to one of the several fronts where the Iraqi army is fighting the Islamic State group in the north of the country. "We are revealing today new Iraqi fighters, new blood, and we will put them on the front lines because they are good fighters," says Brigadier General Mohammed Kadem. US-backed Iraqi forces are slowly pushing IS from its remaining strongholds in the city of Mosul, further to the north, as part of a massive operation launched in October. The Iraqi government does not release the numbers of Iraqi military killed since the battle to take back IS-held territory began in 2014.
