Another 1960's shopping centre that was supposed to be brilliant and innovative... well it was... but plans to demolish it been spoken about in 2000s and the opening of a modern rival opposite meant that retailers were unsure how long the centre was going to be open so stopped investing in the stores or moved out, resulting in the substantial shopping centre becoming a ghost town. Add on all the rest of the retail problems and the Whitgift Centre became a "pass the parcel" of borrowed time. Croydon has been told of plans to demolishing Whitgift but those plans have been repeatedly delayed and this has also affected the whole area, then when the UK's Westfields centres were sold to a french company now called Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield ...catchy(!) This £19 BILLION deal in 2017 meant that the Croydon plans were going to be changed or frozen AGAIN. Sure enough, due to the close proximity of the two current Westfield Shopping Centres and one having just opened a huge extension making it the biggest shopping centre in Europe (Westfield London in White City / Shepherd's Bush) Which has ample parking and incredible amounts of public transport making it probably the most accessible shopping centre in London, Croydon once again had yet another broken promise. With all the 2020 problems compounding the Croydon debacle chain it now looks as if Croydon will never get anything close to what has been planned OR promised for the last 15 years. Will Whitgift Shopping Centre just be given a refresh and not be torn down at all? Maybe it will just be replaced with modern streets in the sky and the once significant area or Greater London become just another bland collection of tall tower blocks of small expensive flats?
