(9 Jul 2000) English/Nat Hundreds of right-wing supporters gathered outside the Prime Ministers office on Sunday to demonstrate against the planned Camp David Summit. Israeli government ministers had arrived for their weekly cabinet meeting. Waving banners the settlers held up pictures of Prime Minister Ehud Barak as a baby in the arms of President Clinton. Another banner proclaimed "Chamberlain-Hitler 1939, Barak-Arafat 2000". Sunday's cabinet session is intended to summarise the issues at stake and discuss possible confidence building measures towards the Palestinians. Among the measures being considered is the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons. Lists of candidates for release are said to have been drawn up and sent to Barak for evaluation. The prime minister and his staff are in the midst of a feverish campaign to win hearts and minds, both at home and abroad. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are telling Ehud Barak that signing an agreement with the mass murderer Arafat will bring the same kind of terror and holocaust to the Jewish people and will bring Israel back to the 1967 Auschwitz borders and will bring only war and destruction. Don't go to Camp David. Remember 1938. Arafat does not want peace."
