Mental illness not loss of control - but too much control (rigidity) owing to fear of loss of control (catastrophizing, paranoia, world hostile, fantasy). Mental illness is not lack of access to reality but a set of defenses against excessive unmediated access (“no skin”). Hyperactivity like tetanus and extreme fever (motor nerve emits high rate of action potentials, hyperrflexia, spasticity) and mental illness is like a muscle relaxant (e.g., curare). Shutting out external reality (too much to process, impossible to control) in preference to internal, rigidly controlled one. “Hyperreflexivity” refers to a form of exaggerated self-awareness (elaborated below) that tends to undermine the stability of normal self-experience or “center of experiential gravity” (Nelson and Sass, 2017). Examples: OCD Personality disorders Psychosis (catatonia, cognitive-behavioral-attitudinal rigidity) Autism Spectrum Disorder (hyperfixation, stimming, repetition, stereotypy, concrete thinking).
