Known as “Bagan Wala Shehar” (City of Orchards), Morinda got its name from the abundance of peacocks (mor) that danced freely in its lush gardens before 1947. Before Partition, Morinda had a diverse population — Chauhan and Tauni Rajputs (mostly farmers), Hindu shopkeepers, and Muslim families. The town had a flourishing bazaar and a railway station connecting Ropar and nearby areas. As violence escalated during Partition, Muslims from surrounding villages took refuge near Morinda’s historic Mughal Dome. A makeshift refugee camp was established, but a brutal attack followed, resulting in mass casualties. Survivors attempted to reach Kurali Camp, but many were ambushed during heavy rain near village Chatamla. Few survived the journey. At Kurali Camp, they faced starvation and disease. This story of Morinda reminds us of the duality of Partition — horror and resilience. The Gumbad, graveyards, Eidgah, market wells, mosques, Kotwali Sahib Gurdwara, and schools still stand as silent witnesses.
