During the early years of Aurangzeb's rule, Medini Rai was the Chero king of Palamu, who ruled from 1658 to 1673. Medini Rai was a powerful and formidable king who, upon ascending the throne, flatly refused to submit to the Mughals. Not only did he stop paying taxes, he also began ravaging all the Mughal territories along the border. He also frequently fought with neighboring kings. He attacked and plundered Doisha, the new capital of the Naga dynasty kings, and also took away a famous stone gate from there, which today adorns the new fort of Palamu, known as the Nagpur Gate. Medini Rai had the new fort of Palamu constructed on a fort adjacent to the old one, and the Nagpur Gate was installed at this time. Aurangzeb, the governor of Bihar, attacked Palamu and ordered the collection of annual tribute from the Chero king. Daud Khan entered Palamu unopposed and took control of the Kothi Fort and Kunda Fort. Chuna Rai, the ruler of Kunda, had converted to Islam and was incorporated by royal charter. However, the Cheros could not tolerate his conversion, and at Medini Rai's instigation, Chuna Rai's brother, Sukhar Rai, murdered him. Meanwhile, rejecting Medini Rai's offer, Daud Khan advanced with his army towards the Chero capital. As ordered by Aurangzeb, Daud Khan proposed to Medini Rai to convert to Islam and pay the offer. Medini Rai, the brave king of Palamu, rejected Aurangzeb's offer and resolved to fight to the last. After a long and arduous struggle, the Chero were defeated, suffering heavy losses in life and property. Their fort fell to the Mughals, and Medini Rai was forced to seek refuge in Ananta, Surguja. However, after the removal of the governor, Mankali Khan, he regained his lost kingdom. Medini Rai has been called a trustee king; he played a significant role in quickly rescuing Palamu from its poverty and leading it to the pinnacle of prosperity. It appears that the Mughals allowed Palamu to remain under his rule, noting its improved condition. Even today, the people of Palamu remember Medini Rai's reign as the golden age of Chero rule. He encouraged agriculture and made commendable efforts to improve the condition of Palamu, which had been plagued by constant Mughal attacks. Palamu became extremely prosperous, and the people had no shortage of amenities. My Instagram Link:- https://instagram.com/jaanviprajapati...
