DAY ONE hashtag#GSEL2025 WORKSHOP 2: UEL SUSTAINABILITY - Prof. Meera Tiwari This insightful presentation highlighted why access to clean and reliable energy (SDG 7) is now seen as the golden thread for human development. Energy poverty — the lack of access to affordable, modern energy — remains one of the biggest barriers to education, healthcare, economic growth, and equality across the world. This event took place at University of East London Key points shared by Prof. Meera Tiwari : 759 million people still lack electricity, and 2.6 billion depend on harmful biomass for cooking. Energy consumption contributes 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, driven mainly by fossil fuels. Transitioning to renewables is essential, but high costs, weak infrastructure, and political interests remain major challenges. Behavioral and lifestyle changes are critical — especially in high-consumption developed countries. Emerging economies, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, have a huge opportunity to leapfrog into renewable-first models rather than repeating fossil-fuel pathways. Promising innovations are emerging — from solar-powered rural mini-grids in Bangladesh to solar canals in India and geothermal expansion in Kenya. The call to action: To end energy poverty and fast-track climate progress, governments, universities, and industries must co-create solutions, invest in clean technologies, and champion equitable access to sustainable energy for all. “Energy is the golden thread that connects economic growth, social equity and environmental sustainability.” — Ban Ki-moon hashtag#SDG7 hashtag#EnergyTransition hashtag#CleanEnergyAccess hashtag#EnergyPoverty hashtag#GSELConference2025 hashtag#SustainabilityLeadership hashtag#ClimateAction hashtag#InnovationForGood hashtag#AfricaEnergyFuture hashtag#HumanDevelopment
