Emetophobia (the fear of vomiting) can take over a person’s life. People with emetophobia may avoid restaurants, travel, social events, pregnancy, or even relationships because of the intense anxiety surrounding the possibility of getting sick. In this video, I explain what emetophobia is, how it affects daily life, and how Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy can help people gradually face their fears and reclaim their lives. Many people with emetophobia develop safety behaviors such as excessive hand washing, constantly checking food expiration dates, carrying anti-nausea medications, or avoiding situations where vomiting might occur. While these behaviors may provide temporary relief, they can keep the fear cycle going. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based treatment that helps individuals learn to tolerate uncertainty and reduce avoidance behaviors over time. Treatment is gradual, supportive, and tailored to each person’s pace. If you or someone you love struggles with emetophobia, recovery is possible with the right support.
