Beyond your initial cataract evaluation appointment, the next step is a Surgical Scheduling visit which is typically performed a week or so after your initial exam. There, one of our highly knowledgeable surgical coordinators will review other aspects of your surgical journey, such as pre and post-operative care, your eye drop schedule, and associated costs of the surgery,. They will then schedule your surgical appointment at one of our on-site AAAASF certified Ambulatory Surgery Centers. If you are recommended for cataract surgery for both eyes, your surgeries would typically be performed two weeks apart. Medicated eye drops are to be started two days before each surgery and to be continued for one month after each surgery. After surgery, you should expect to be checked by an eye doctor one day, one week, and one month after the surgery. The surgery will typically take between 10-20 minutes, and the entire stay at the surgery center would likely be around 2 hours. On the day of surgery, you will be given a mild, twilight level of anesthesia where you will expect to still be awake, but remain relaxed throughout the surgical process. A numbing drop would also be applied to your eye. Typically, stitches and injections are not required. Patients do not report experiencing pain during or after surgery; rather, they usually experience a mild burning sensation that is similar to numbing drops being placed into the eye. During the surgery, the patient should expect to remain reclined and would focus on a bright light to keep the eye still. The bright light also ensures that the patient is not able to see the surgeon, nor can the patient make out any aspect of the procedure. Patients may experience slight to moderate blurred vision and a mild foreign body sensation after surgery. Patients typically notice an improvement in vision within the first day or two of surgery, but vision will continue to stabilize for up to 4-6 weeks after surgery.
