Alaska Moose Hunt 2024, Riley Clugston of PA, and Dave Conley from Maine in pursuit of the Alaska Yukon bull moose. Access was by charter plane landing in a remote village with a dirt strip followed by many miles over dirt roads to reach our river destination. This DIY moose hunt places you in the Alaska bush, home to grizzly and black bears, wolves, and wolverines. This was Riley's 3rd moose hunt and 1st hunt in Alaska and Dave's 7th season hunting moose in Alaska. Dave first hunted Alaska back in 2018 and encountered an unusually warm season resulting in the bulls not moving much and he did not harvest a bull that season. Due to obligations back in Maine with his guided moose hunts in northern Maine ( https://canoethewild.com/guided-maine... ), Dave hunts the early phase of the moose rut when the bulls are moving, scent-checking cows, and setting dominance for the right to breed. Once bulls are in lockdown with their cows and not moving, it can be hard to get them to come to the call. Cold weather helps with movement and focusing on the early morning and evenings is the most productive. Bulls can often be coaxed into responding to the call when they think a dominant bull is encroaching on his cow! Nonresidents are not required to hire a guide when hunting moose in Alaska but it does require research, good outdoor camping, and survival skills. Over the past 7 seasons, they have encountered torrential downpours, high winds for days at a time, and numerous close encounters with brown bears. Knowing how to set up and manage your campsite is critical in the Alaska bush and some of your best tools are patience and knowing how to keep your wits about you when faced with predators and harsh elements. An invaluable tool on this hunt for getting a moose out of the water was a 3/4 Ton Rope Puller (50' Rope) much like a come along, it uses a rope instead of a cable ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PWJT7S?) ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_titleWe anchored it off to the base of a clump of poplar trees on the gavel bar Dave's moose hunting rifle was a Tikka Lite 300 Win Mag topped with a Leupold VX-31 3.5 X 10 50mm. (https://choose.tikka.fi/usa/code/JRTX...) While this season the outfitter provided us with a wall tent, the best tent we have used on previous hunts is the Cabela's Alaskan Guide Model Geodesic 8-Person Tent which is a very dry tent that handles high winds when staked down properly. This tent, while on the heavy side, works well for 2 hunters with cots. (https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabel... ) A common bush plane in Alaska that many air taxis use is the de Havilland Beaver on floats with a payload of 1200 LBS. Other planes such as the Piper Cub with tundra tires will get you into smaller places such as ridge tops and gravel bars but limit you on how much weight you can bring in. Many moose hunters go at it backpack-style when flying in a cub. Speaking of going at it backpack style, there are many options for meals but we have found the Mountain House makes some of the best and most affordable dehydrated meals. ( https://mountainhouse.com/ ) Mix it up with some potato, onion, and seasoning to go with some tenderloin or back strap after harvesting your moose! This is not a sponsored endorsement. We just love their products!
