Anders Edenroth’s Pass Me the Jazz is a vibrant and playful vocal jazz piece that combines wit, energy, and technical brilliance. Written for SATBB voices with optional piano, guitar, and bass accompaniment, it was originally performed and recorded by the Swedish a cappella ensemble The Real Group on their 2009 release *The Real Album*. Edenroth, a founding member of the ensemble, composed both the music and lyrics, crafting a showpiece that blends rhythmic drive with humor and expressive freedom. The piece is fast-paced and infused with the lively spirit of scat singing, challenging vocalists to navigate quick rhythmic patterns and tight harmonies with precision and flair. One of its unique features is the absence of written dynamic markings, leaving interpretation entirely in the hands of the performers. This opens the door for creative expression—each performance can take on a different shape, from subtle builds to explosive climaxes, depending on the ensemble’s artistic vision. Lyrically, Pass Me the Jazz is full of clever wordplay and metaphor, likening jazz itself to a delicious meal. Lines such as “Put me on a jazzy diet” invite singers to lean into the humor and theatricality of the piece. Its lighthearted imagery, combined with a toe-tapping groove and crisp syncopation, makes it both a crowd-pleaser and a technical challenge for advanced vocal groups. The work’s popularity extends beyond The Real Group—other ensembles, including The King’s Singers, have embraced it in performance, and it has become a favorite in vocal jazz festivals and concerts. The score and instrumental parts are widely available through GIA Publications, Walton Music, and major retailers, making it accessible to choirs around the world. This rendition of the festive Jazz-piece is brought to you by conducter Jonas Rasmussen and Youth Choir Aarhus U. Ultimately, Pass Me the Jazz is more than just a jazz tune—it’s an invitation to play, to experiment, and to let the joy of music take center stage. Its combination of rhythmic vitality, humorous lyrics, and interpretive freedom makes it a standout piece in modern vocal jazz repertoire.
