Atlantic Starr came to my attention with the song "Secret Lovers" in 1985. I bought that album as well as the 1987 LP that had "Always" on it. Loved listening to FM hot hit radio in the mornings and "Always" became an instant favorite. I picked up their greatest hits which covered their earlier material and found this funky disco tune called "Stand Up" that encouraged you to get out and get your voice heard. Those life affirming lyrics against that pumping bass line and funky guitars are sung with such conviction, they keep preachin to me. I'm surprised that I never heard this song until well in the 90's. I got my paws on the extended promo 12", hoping to get something this good out there again. This group got started in 1976 New York state with Duke Jones, Clifford Archer, Porter Carroll Jr, Joseph Phillips and the three Lewis Brothers, David, Wayne and Jonathon. A few personnel changes later, the brothers took on Sharon Bryant and a couple of new members and hit the nightclub scene in 1977 as "Newban". Shortly after this they adopted Atlantic Starr as the group name and set about recording their debut album for A&M Records. The first single, the funky hands in the air "Stand Up" made waves on the R&B chart where it peaked at #16, an on the disco/dance chart making Top 30, having reached #26. They continued putting out new material, but nothing clicked until they released "Circles" in 1982 which became their Hot 100 debut peaking at #38."Touch A Four Leaf Clover" became an R&B smash in 1983 jumping all the way up to 4th place, but the band was fracturing with the brothers on one side and dissident members on the other, mass mutiny occured over the direction the band should take. Female lead vocalist Sharon Bryant and the dissident members wanted more say in how the band operated and left when they were not successful. Atlantic Starr regrouped, hiring Barbara Weathers to replace Bryant and rebounded with the #3 "Secret Lovers" from 1985, and setting the scene for the #1 "Always".
