Brand new single. The official lyric video for Tom Marshall's - Holes In My Pockets. (Lyrics) Verse 1: Holes in my pockets, loose change on the floor Shoes without soles in the rain. No umbrella, soaked to the bone We’re proud here of good English weather. Verse 2: An island of eccentrics, a country of fame It’s just a place I like to call home. I live in a house with a city in front And fields of gold in my back garden. Bridge: Divided by secrets we keep to ourselves But everyone wants to know more. We shout and protest but we’ll never confess The truth will go to our graves. Chorus: Somehow we know The songs get longer when We’re just aching for home. Verse 3: It started with Guinness, then whiskey and shots A friendship that grew from that day. We sang and we danced til the sun hit our eyes And since then that’s been our way. Bridge: Divided by secrets we keep to ourselves But everyone wants to know more. We shout and protest but we’ll never confess The truth will go to our graves. Verse 4: I’ve travelled these streets with a song in my head, More than ten years ago to this day. Dreams are like castles that crumble with time, But history is a story that stays. Bridge: Divided by secrets we keep to ourselves But everyone wants to know more. We shout and protest but we’ll never confess The truth will go to our graves. Chorus: Somehow we know The songs get longer when We’re just aching for home. Holes in my pockets, loose change on the floor, shoes without soles in the rain. I never finished it. Instead, it followed me around for over a decade. Every few years I’d add a line, a verse, or a new idea, shaped by whatever life had thrown at me since the last time I picked it up. Slowly, without me really realising, it became a song that spans about ten years of living. The problem was I never knew what to do with it. In truth, I’m not a great singer, and these days I don’t play in bands or sit in rehearsal rooms. I wasn’t in that world anymore, and it didn’t feel like something I could just ask someone to help me finish. Then I discovered Suno, an AI music tool. I know the reactions that sentence can provoke. But here’s what actually happened. I recorded myself performing the song on my phone. I put that into Suno and for the first time I could hear the song properly. It was close, but something was missing. It didn’t quite have the spark. So I went looking for a human voice. I found a singer-songwriter called Thomas Penninger, based in Austria. I sent him the Suno track and asked if he’d be interested in covering it. He came back with a piano-vocal version, sung with a rawness and emotional honesty that stopped me in my tracks. That vocal became the heart of the track. I then brought his performance back into Suno and built a stronger arrangement around it. Not to replace the human part, but to support it. What came out the other side finally sounded like the song I’d been carrying around for years. There’s a lot of talk about AI at the moment, especially about what it means for the creative sector. For me, this wasn’t about replacing anything, it was about finding a way to finish something that started as an honest expression, and had been sitting in my drawer of ideas for years. After seventeen years, I’ve finally let the song go. 'Holes In My Pockets' is out now.
