When a service member leaves the military, their children leave the military too. The transition to civilian life brings unique challenges for middle and high school students — from losing their military identity and community to navigating new schools, making new friends, and adjusting to a family that looks and feels different than it did before. In this webinar, presented on Veterans Day, MCEC's Marie McGarry and Emily Barton walk parents through what military teens experience during this transition and share practical strategies to help them adjust, connect, and thrive. This webinar was made possible thanks to the support of Navy Child and Youth Programs. In this webinar, you'll learn: Why the transition to civilian life is a major adjustment for the whole family — not just the service member The most common academic challenges transitioning students face, including curriculum gaps, credit loss, IEP concerns, and course placement The social-emotional toll of frequent moves, including loss of identity, friendship disruption, and feeling caught between two worlds How the Military Interstate Children's Compact (MIC3) protects your child's educational rights across all 50 states Why building an academic portfolio before you move can make a real difference How to have honest, age-appropriate conversations with your teen about transition Strategies for building new connections, developing hope, and giving children a sense of control during uncertainty 🔗 Resources mentioned in this video: Military Interstate Children's Compact (MIC3): mic3.net Bloom – Empowering the Military Teen (virtual peer community): bloomempowering.org MCEC Webinar: Academic Portfolios for Military-Connected Students: MilitaryChild.org Military OneSource: militaryonesource.mil MCEC Military Student Consultants (free, one-on-one support): msc@militarychild.org MCEC Well-Being Toolkit: MilitaryChild.org Dr. Ken Ginsburg's book: Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings 📬 Questions about your military-connected child's education?
