I only had about an hour total, and it was raining on and off, so figured I would give my first attempt ever at using a Hamstick to try and do a Parks on the Air activation at Illinois Beach State Park in Beach Park, Illinois, park K-1000. I learned quite a few things about using a hamstick, or trying to use a hamstick at least. These are the Hamsticks made by Shark and were purchased at Ham Radio Outlet. It was coupled to a Tram Magnet Mount and stuck to the roof of my VW Tiguan SUV. Tuning was a problem from the get go. Using my RigExpert AA-54 Antenna Analyzer, it showed my SWR on 20m was 1.35:1 at 14.200 MHz. When I hooked it to the radio, the radio was reporting my SWR was over 3:1 and it could not tune using the internal tuner on the IC-7300. What I ended up doing was pressing the TUNE button on the radio and engaging the tuner to use whatever the last setting was and surprisingly it brought it down to about 1.5:1. While not ideal at all it was into a safe zone for me to try and operate. I called CQ for 10 minutes with no results, I couldn't hear any other POTA activators on 20 meters SSB, so I switched over to 14.074 and BAM FT8 to the rescue! I was able to make 25 contacts on 20m and got the park activated and am now just a little bit closer to my POTA Kilo Award and my Repeater Offender Award from K-1000!
