Humans are set to return to the Moon and establish a long-term presence there. Through NASA’s Artemis campaign, astronauts will learn how to live on the Moon, carry out important scientific investigations, and prove key technology for future Mars exploration. However, we may also bring other types of life with us inadvertently, microbial life. In this talk, Dr. Prabal Saxena, a research space scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, discusses what types of microbes we might bring, whether they’ll be able to survive, and why such survival matters. This lecture was recorded on January 22, 2026. We’re engaging students in NASA’s exciting missions, broad range of careers, and unique opportunities. Join us as we apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to explore space, improve aeronautics, examine Earth, and strive to land the next humans on the Moon with the Artemis program.
