This was one of the first songs we learned 25 years ago, back when I had hair like Troy Polamalu and was fronting the State College grunge/metal band Judgement. My favorite memory of this song was performing it during our third and final set one night at the no-longer-existing Skeller. Sure, the first set of the night is the most exciting. The crowd is a mixture of friends and those who are curious to see if you’re gonna do anything worth hanging around for…lots of energy and nerves! But by the time you get to the 3rd set around 1am, you’re just having fun. Now the crowd is a mix of friends and drunken maniacs (often one and the same) who are gonna stay til they turn the lights on, regardless of how you’re sounding that night. Anyway…on this particular night, I recall walking off the stage and singing this song while circling and hanging from a giant support beam, my co-workers from the Autoport a few feet away and looking moderately amused, my man Z 20 ft or so behind them working his dark magic on the sound board. It’s funny how a rather unremarkable event such as this can stick with you. If I had to guess, it was probably that feeling of being completely in the moment, free from all other concerns, during which the music seemed to happen all by itself, that cemented it in my mind. For a brief window of time, you’re equal parts spectator and performer. Whenever you reach that place, it always feels pretty darn special…
