Over six decades, Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) worked in an astonishing range of mediums and became a transformative gure in postwar American culture. Working alone and in collaboration, he produced a vast and in uential body of work. Leah Dickerman, Marlene Hess Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art and co-organizer of the current Rauschenberg retrospective (London, New York, and San Francisco), explores the ideas that led to the show’s genesis. Each year this series, in honor of the late Menil Trustee Marion Barthelme Fort, invites a distinguished speaker to explore the work of a key artist in the Menil Collection.
