“I enjoy the work. This is the first job I’ve had where I don’t dread coming to work for some reason. I really enjoy it when I’m here.” Community Service Officer Kelsey Anderson While police officer and dispatcher careers are familiar to the public, our community service officers are also vital to providing efficient service to the community and the public may be less familiar with their role in community safety. CSO’s perform an abundance of paraprofessional public safety support duties involving non-criminal code enforcement, public assistance, and support to sworn police officers. Among their duties are responding to non-emergency calls to perform services such as arranging for towing vehicles, retrieving stolen property, providing assistance at routine collision scenes, performing traffic control and traffic hazard removal, and writing citations, either independently or in a support role. CSO’s may serve as desk officers and prepare written reports on incidents not requiring a police officer response, such as non-criminal requests for assistance and parking complaints. CSO’s also provide information to citizens on crime prevention topics and public safety regulations, policies, and procedures as appropriate.
