By now you may have noticed a pattern in this week's musical offerings, which did not start out as being intentional. But when I noticed that four pieces that I had chosen all had composers starting with the letter C I decided to go full Sesame Street mode on it and make all of them by C composers! Certainly there were enough that it wasn't a particularly difficult task; in this case the Couperin chosen is Gervais-François, one of the last of the dynasty and the only one to write for the keyboard instrument that was beginning to take over France as it had the rest of Europe: the piano. This earlier work is still for harpsichord, though of course it can be played on either. France was reluctant to give up their harpsichord music until the very late 18th century. To put this piece in historical perspective, only one year later the young Beethoven would publish his first piano variations.
