#25 from 'Parfums d'encens' (Fragrances of incense, 1932) -------------------------------------------- Phillip Sear plays his (slight) piano adaptation of a piece from a set 'in the Gregorian spirit' for organ or harmonium by the French pianist and composer Hedwige Chrétien (1859 - 1944). -------------------------------------------- I find it strange that so little attention has been given to Chrétien (or Chrétien-Gennaro as she was sometimes known), compared with her almost exact contemporary Cécile Chaminade (1857 - 1944). The range and quantity of her output mirrors that of Chaminade. I guess that she didn't have the starry early patronage that Chaminade had - although César Franck described her as an outstanding student. She studied and became a teacher (of solfège) at the Paris Conservatoire, rather than a performer, and received some notice for her 'Ballet Orientale'.
