Transplanting small, bare-root trees is a great, budget-friendly way to add plants to your landscape. The saplings I am transplanting were taken from my mom's property and planted in our backfield, where we are trying to establish shade trees and mature landscaping. This is my first time transplanting trees from nature and I am excited to see them develop over time. The douglas fir is a forest tree transplant and two bigleaf maple saplings were small enough that their roots were easily lifted. The Douglas fir became an unintentional bare-root transfer when I discovered there was a very limited root system and none of it was firmly attached to the surrounding soil. I am transplanting these trees during dormancy when the plants will not be putting as much energy into producing leaves, and instead more energy into their root system. This will allow the transplants to establish their root systems in their new locations over the winter before they begin to bud out in the spring.
