What comes next on the I-77S Toll lane project?

Opposition is growing over a proposed expansion of toll lanes along Interstate 77, as city leaders weigh whether they have the power to pause a project that could impact historically Black communities in west Charlotte. The project would extend toll lanes roughly 11 miles from the Interstate 277 interchange south to the South Carolina state line. Transportation officials recently announced they selected what they described as the “least impactful” design — an elevated structure placing new lanes above or alongside the existing interstate. But since design drawings were released, residents and several City Council members have raised concerns about potential effects on nearby neighborhoods.
