Here's a video presentation of my newly acquired 1890's Monopol disc music box playing a "Comic song" from the German composer Paul Lincke. 00:00 Overview of the music box 00:25 Winding and running the engine 01:22 Playing the disk The disc here is a Symphonion, given that the 30cm Symphonion and Monopol discs are (apparently) compatible. I have installed a stereo microphone above the box but haven't integrated the audio yet in this video - I hope my camera still does justice to the sound of this beauty! The disc is not in the best shape ever and hence, you can hear a mistake or too in the tune, but I thought it was a really nice arrangement. I am currently working on making new discs for it, to stop playing the old rusty ones that may damage the mechanism - any help is appreciated in that aspect, I am specifically trying to figure out what stamp and dye shape to use in order to make the specific curls at the back of a metal sheet. Once I learn more about this model of box's history and specs, I hope to carry out a proper cleaning / restoration of certain elements. The previous owner was an avid collector who had several dozens disc music boxes (literally), and he had this one in his collection for more than 30 years, but barely ever played it. He unfortunately didn't have a provenance for this box, but I am hoping to be able to find the serial number through the bottom plate (it has become almost invisible but still present). He didn't carry out any work on it himself, but there are subtle traces of a meticulous, previous restoration present on the box that were probably done by the owner before him: broken wire spring welded back, some pieces of the cabinet re-glued into place, and also the shellac finish has been touched up in some places. I am still unsure whether the tuning is original or not for instance, as the box is not in 440Hz. I will probably inspect the back of the combs soon to see if I can learn more there. Enjoy!
