In the medical literature, cases of endotracheal intubation through retrograde intubation are somewhat heterogeneous and have been used both in the management of patients with known and unknown airways. In the same way, this technique has been performed in the hospital as well as in the prehospital when the usual methods of intubation have failed, and even in animals (veterinary and research). However, the traditional indications of retrograde intubation are summarized in three groups: 1) Intubation failed after direct laryngoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy or failure of the airway approach with laryngeal masks. 2) Urgent situations in which the vocal cords are not visualized by bleeding, secretions or anatomical lesions but the patient can be ventilated. 3) As an alternative in cases of cervical spine instability, maxillofacial trauma or anatomical alterations.
