It begins atempo, with attractive brass choir voicings, and then settles into a mellow groove that is typically Basie. Laws outdoes himself, and the Count’s piano is heard again, briefly, before the brasses take the tune out. Nelson has proved again that the tunes of the New Jazz players can provide more meat and excitement in big band versions than the majority of rock tunes, which are conceived within a very specific rhythmic and harmonic framework.
