If you saw my video on the films & shows that got disability representation right, this is the flip side where the media often gets it very wrong. 1. Me Before You. It came out just as I was entering the world of disability & it was the worst thing I could’ve watched at that time. I believe people deserve the right to make choices over how they live & die. but it presents disability as a fate worse than death. That’s not representation. That’s a harmful narrative telling newly disabled people, & more worryingly non disabled people, that disabled lives aren’t worth living. 2. Snow White. Disney are generally improving but the new Snow white was a big miss. Whilst they didn’t remove the dwarfs entirely, they reimagined them as CGI “magical creatures.” It shows how quickly studios will sideline disabled people to avoid making non-disabled audiences uncomfortable. That’s not progress, It’s exclusion. They could’ve rewritten decades of harmful tropes around dwarfism giving those characters heart, depth & dignity. Instead, they erased them to the point of removing them from the title. 3. Why are all the villains disabled? From scars to prosthetics, disability is often used as visual shorthand for evil. Think Captain Hook or the Bond villains in No Time to Die & how their disability is central to how they’re framed as threats. It’s lazy, harmful & reinforces the idea that being different makes you dangerous. 4. Inspiration Tropes. Films like The Theory of Everything often turn disabled people into heroes for “overcoming” their disability. But living in a disabled body isn’t inherently tragic or brave. It’s just life. 5. Casting. I love Superstore & Garrett’s character gets a lot right but it’s disappointing that they cast a non-disabled actor. There aren’t many roles made for disabled people so at least hire disabled people for the ones that are. Representation Matters. It shapes how the world sees us & how we see ourselves. So next time you watch something, ask yourself: Whose story is being told? Who’s missing from it? And who’s telling it!
