The American Heart Association approves cephalexin as a preventive antibiotic prior to dental procedures in those at risk of heart valve infection. Cephalexin does not cause a significant incidence of adverse reactions. Those with mild to moderate penicillin intolerance often have no problems with cephalexin. For those with more severe penicillin allergy, prudence suggests avoiding cephalexin. Alcohol decreases absorption of cephalexin. Tagamet and Zantac also lower blood levels of the antibiotic while cephalexin increases the serum concentration of metformin by about 30%.
