This caprice is one of the caprices Robert Schumann arranged for piano. It starts and finishes with what it essentially a cadenza, one that imitates a vocal cadenza, with the "high note" getting progressively higher. The middle section is in binary, but only the first section is repeated. The second second section is a long development in different keys, finally finishing with a return to A minor that changes to A major in the final cadenza. The excellence of this middle section comes in the exquisite exploitation of the range of the violin, the main subject is repeated in the lowest possible register -- on the G and D strings -- then on the A and E strings, and finally above all the open strings, but the development is different depending on the location. The development on the A and E strings goes low, while the original development -- which cannot go lower than the lowest string -- stays low and at the end modulates up to the A and E strings. Good violin composers use all the strings. A bad violin composer stays mostly on the most brilliant strings, the A and E.
