At the Conservator's Bench: Chen Wen Hsi’s “Gibbons” The fourth edition of our series shines a spotlight on “Gibbons”, a monumental artwork by the pioneering Singaporean artist Chen Wen Hsi. Currently displayed in Gallery 1 of the newly opened “Singapore Stories: Pathways & Detours in Art” (2024), this ink painting measures an impressive 190 x 488 cm and features Chen's iconic gibbon motif, showcasing a lively troupe at play among tree branches against a dramatic cliff backdrop. This video captures the intricate conservation process of this treasured artwork, honouring Chen's creative legacy through one of his largest and most elaborated paintings on this subject. Don’t miss the chance to witness the meticulous efforts that went into bringing this artwork on display for all to appreciate. This video was made possible through a collaboration between National Gallery Singapore and the Heritage Conservation Centre (National Heritage Board).
