After accident, Brooklyn Park Lions drummer marches on

The Brooklyn Park Lions Drum and Dance team not only shines at parades and competitions. But the group has also been a bright spot for one of the team members. Dezmine Kinney, 18, always wanted to join the drum team, but a horrible car accident on Feb. 18, 2016, prevented that from happening. "They hit my side, my foot got stuck under the seat, so it split my foot apart. it broke my collar bone, broke my ribs." Kinney was in a wheelchair for months. His parents and band program director, Johnnie Gurley, told him if he wanted to join the team, he'd have to get out of the wheelchair. "I would always tell him, just take your time, take your time," said Gurley. After months of physical therapy, Kinney was finally back on his feet and playing drums. "When I was actually playing and wearing the drum, it was heavy. Because it was hard to put it on my collarbone" Kinney said. "It just blew me away, how all of the sudden one day he's in the wheelchair, the next day he's performing with us," said Gurley. While Kinney still has trouble walking at times, he's determined to let the music play on. "Get up, push yourself, do not let it bother you. Just get up, push yourself through it, let other people inspire you." There are about 60 children and young adults, ranging in age from 7 to 21, with the Brooklyn Park Lions Drum and Dance team. The team has won many awards. You can see them perform at parades throughout the metro.
