No. The thing of cleft lip and cleft palate is that whole of one may occur in one patient or none may occur in one patient or part of it may happen. The reason behind this is the way the cleft lip and cleft palate develops. Cleft lip and cleft palate happens due to something that happens during the 7th week of intrauterine life. During a span of 7 to 8 hours, is the time where the lip and the palate forms and if for some reason, this formation is obstructed, this may result in a cleft lip and cleft palate. If the formation is obstructed only partially, then it may lead to only partial cleft lip and cleft palate. Different grades of cleft lip and cleft palate are there like the cleft may be only on one side or it may be on both side, that is it maybe a unilateral cleft lip or it may be a bilateral cleft lip. It may involve the alveolus where it involves only the cleft lip and the alveolus or only the cleft lip is there or only the alveolus or the anterior part of the palate maybe there, that is the front part of the palate is involved. In some people only the behind portion of the palate, that is only the soft palate is involved. In some people both the soft palate and the hard palate might be involved. Very rarely there may not be a gap and the muscles are not developed and in such cases, there may be a bad speech. So the cleft lip and cleft palate is an entire spectrum of diseases starting from complete bilateral to only the cleft of the palate or a submusous cleft, the treatment for each of these is done by a plastic surgeon. These can be treated provided it is diagnosed very early. Once it is diagnosed early, then the treatment can be started.
