Con moto, senza rigore (♪ = 112) 07:21 - Allegro pesante (♩= 112) One year before the famous Amis de l'Orgue-prizewinning Suite pour orgue was completed and submitted at the age of twenty-four, promising musician and composer Jehan Alain prepared a chamber work for string quintet: an 'Andante con variazioni'. The Église Saint Germain des Prés was the venue for the première performance of the former. The second movement was added later; although he did not intend to unite the two in a single movement, it was posthumously done by Olivier and Marie-Claire Alain, the composer's younger siblings who were talented musicians themselves. Georges Guillard writes: "Although the palette of colour for the organ, its spatial breadth, and its ethos cannot be denied, the strings have a polyphonic independence, a mobility, a flexibility, and a variety of nuance; which is cruelly lacking on the organ. Played on the strings, the Variations undulate nonchalantly, sigh tenderly, or attain frenzied exaltation. The _Scherzo_, on the other hand, with its violence and contrasts reminiscent of Ludwig van Beethoven, seems to acquire from them an additional evocative power."; according to a slightly modified version of a translation by Clare Perkins. Alphonse Leduc published the work posthumously in 1990. Olivier Alain would later pass away four years later. Selon la description de cette chaîne, je ne possède rien dans cette vidéo.
