John, leader of the South London Revival Scooter Club, is born and bred London, from spending his twenties and thirties hanging out down the Kings Road on his scooter to still being a scooter enthusiast today, however opting for the more quiet life in Mitcham. But his passion for two wheels doesn’t stop there; his Vespa PX200 takes him to all the revival meet ups and ride outs; from London to Brighton, Southend and beyond! On the day of the shoot, it was John’s 65th birthday, a first for a 1000 Londoner’s shoot! We are the mods! 1000 LONDONERS This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view. www.1000londoners.com / 1000londoners www.facebook.com/1000londoners Twitter: @1000_londoners 1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. I did have a motorbike and a scooter, so when I went out with my friends on scooters, I wouldn't let them know I had a a motorbike and vice versa with the motorbikes and hence the nickname Mocker. This is a vespa 200, these were designed with a 125 engine but this is a 200 so straight away you've got more power and it's more flexible so if you've got two people on it it will pull better. I met Jackie in Shepherds Bush funnily enough, the pub was called The Wellington and it's now McDonalds. She came up to me and said 'Do you fancy a grope?' and I said 'What!' I said 'No I don't!' I said '-but I'll have your phone number' and she said 'Well you want my phone number, I want a grope' and that's how we met. And that's a true story! This is our badge for the club - 'South London Revival' , this is the Italian flag for Italian scooters, that is the target that everybody knows and that's the actual name of the group. We meet every Monday and we arrange rides. There's just a few of us here at the moment but usually in the summer there's a lot more. These people that have got these scooters, they love their scooter, in fact I'm sure most of the guys that have got these vintage scooters - if their wives said it's me or the scooter, they'd say byebye love. We inherited the club but we've been doing it how long now? About 12-13 years. Basically Jackie runs the website and I'm just a goafer. No you're the one that stops us getting lost. I know my way around if we go on a ride out I'll always be out the front. My scooter has taken me many times down to Portsmouth, Milton Keynes, South End, there's so many places. Loads of time down to Brighton, that is the main. I think it knows its way on its own to Brighton. Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. I'm 65 now and you know I wanna keep going as long as I can. It just puts a grin on your face and lots of flies in your teeth.
