Michigan State Police Pursuit Through Downtown 𝕯etroit | Suspect Caught With 5 Pounds of Meth

On June 6th, 2023, troopers of the Michigan State Police Metro South Post were contacted by DEA Group 3 seeking assistance with an investigation involving a confirmed large quantity of methamphetamine being trafficked into Detroit, MI. DEA Group 3 informed troopers they maintained constant surveillance on the suspect vehicle and indicated an unknown suspect entered the suspect vehicle (a black Honda Accord bearing California registration 9FSH407). DEA Group 3 intel further confirmed the suspect vehicle was traveling eastbound Warren Ave near Chase Rd in Dearborn, MI. After was traveling eastbound Warren Ave from Schaefer Rd in Dearborn, MI. At this newest update, troopers decided to attempt a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle for a vehicle violation after eventually locating it at the intersection of Warren Ave & 32nd St in Detroit, MI. MSP K9-21 Tpr. Olszewski, Tpr. Mejia, Tpr. Longuski, & I activated our emergency lights and attempted to contain the suspect vehicle in order to prevent it from fleeing. The suspect however successfully evaded this attempt and fled eastbound Warren Ave. During the attempted traffic stop, all troopers were in fully marked MSP patrol vehicles with functioning emergency lights and sirens. With emergency lights and sirens still activated, I pursued the suspect vehicle eastbound Warren Ave & at 32nd St where the suspect disregarded a steady red traffic light. I continued to pursue the vehicle eastbound Warren Ave to southbound Grand River Ave where the suspect vehicle maintained high speeds. I pursued the vehicle southbound Grand River Ave where the suspect began to slow their speeds due to slight traffic congestion. After pursuing the vehicle southbound Grand River Ave & Time Square, I successfully conducted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, resulting in the suspect vehicle becoming immobilized. During the time I made contact with the suspect vehicle, MSP Watch Guard in car camera system indicated my patrol vehicle speeds were 36mph. Prior to conducting the PIT maneuver, I considered several factors regarding the incident. I considered the suspect driving directly to downtown Detroit, MI which is a heavily populated area with substantial pedestrian foot traffic. I further considered the suspect potentially crashing into an occupied dwelling or residence (apartment complex) due to his excessive speeds, resulting in the death of a citizen. Criminals involved in high-level narcotic trafficking are known to carry firearms on them to protect themselves and their contraband. I was attempting to prevent any civilian casualties / injures in the previously mentioned heavily populated area if the suspect decided to present a firearms with the intention to kill law enforcement. During the pursuit, Sgt. Courtley indicated he was aware of the pursuit and was monitoring. After completing the PIT maneuver, my patrol vehicle came to rest directly next to the suspect vehicle's front passenger window. At this time, I was unable to observe the suspect's hands and subsequently drew my firearm from within my patrol vehicle and acquired target on the suspect. I gave loud verbal commands to see the suspect's hands, however due to the amount of law enforcement vehicle's and their emergency sirens still activated, the suspect was unable to hear me. At this time, I struck the driver's side front window in order to gain the suspect's attention. This attempt was successful and caused the suspect to look directly at me. As I gave loud verbal commands to see the suspect's hands, he complied and raised them above the steering wheel level for law enforcement to observe. At this time, I observed Tpr. Mejia exit his patrol vehicle and approach the suspect, causing me to drive from my current position and park behind the suspect vehicle in order to prevent him from fleeing again. After the suspect failed to comply with several loud verbal commands to exit the vehicle, the suspect's front driver's side window was smashed i n order for law enforcement to gain access inside the vehicle. The suspect was subsequently removed from the vehicle and taken into custody without incident.
