Spain astonished the sporting world when they soared into the 2023 Women’s World Cup final in Sydney before going on to beat England 1-0 and claim football’s ultimate prize. But the joy of their triumph was short-lived. Within minutes of winning, Spain’s top football administrator Luis Rubiales kissed a player on the lips without consent. Rubiales was eventually charged with sexual assault and coercion, and his trial is currently underway on in Madrid. His action on that day shocked the world. But it wasn’t an isolated incident. Tonight, on Foreign Correspondent former players and staff reveal how women and girls have endured a toxic misogynistic culture for years. The ABC’s Europe Correspondent Kathryn Diss talks to the football stars who were there on the night, including two-time Ballon d’or winner Alexia Putellas and up and coming Arsenal star Laia Codina. They tell her about their own distressing experiences and why they believe that “kiss” sparked Spain’s “Me Too” moment. With all eyes now on the Rubiales’ trial the players are hoping this day of reckoning will forever change the appalling way women have been treated in the sport they love. 0:00 The Spanish National team, the world cup and the infamous kiss 3:50 Florence, Italy, Vero Boquete, The history and culture of Women’s football in Spain 6:33 Ignacio Quereda and the mistreatment of women national players. 9:00 2015 Women’s World Cup and the players asking for change 11:31 Jorge Vilda and the failure to change 13:06 Luis Rubiales Appointed, and account of Beatriz Alvarez Mesa who worked alongside him 15:09 Alexia Putellas, Her own struggles and difficulties 16:14 The gap in support and professionalism between the mens and womens teams 17:47 Lola Gallardo, rejecting the national team because of poor conditions 18:58 Laia Codina, being called up after player protest and the 2023 world cup run 21:11 Spain wins the world cup and Luis Rubiales’s behaviour and kiss and its aftermath 25:09 The “Se acabó” protests, Luis Rubiales defies resignation and his removal 27:17 The trial of Luis Rubiales and other federation staff 28:26 Change and the future of women’s football Subscribe: https://ab.co/3yqPOZ5 About Foreign Correspondent: Foreign Correspondent is the prime-time international public affairs program on Australia's national broadcaster, ABC-TV.
