Join the first edition of The Artery Report, brought to you by the Global PAD Association, hosted by CEO Kym McNicholas and vascular surgeon Dr. James Antezana of South Charlotte General & Vascular Surgery. Each episode brings you the latest breakthroughs, research, and real-world insights into vascular health, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and emerging technologies that may shape the future of artery care. THIS WEEK’S TOP STORIES 1. Microscopic “Micro-Swimmers” Designed to Clear Arteries Engineers at Drexel University have developed microscopic robotic “micro-swimmers” made from tiny iron oxide beads that can travel through blood vessels to loosen plaque. Controlled by magnetic fields, these micro-robots could one day help clear arterial blockages less invasively than surgery. Still early, but a fascinating glimpse into the future of vascular treatment. 2. New 2025 Research on Polyphenols & Heart Health A December 2025 study from King’s College London found that diets rich in polyphenol-rich foods — including extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, berries, tea, and whole grains — are linked to healthier blood pressure, better cholesterol, and a lower predicted risk of cardiovascular disease. But what does this actually mean for PAD patients, and how should they use olive oil safely and realistically? 3. Microplastics Found in Arterial Plaque Researchers studying 258 patients undergoing surgery for blocked arteries found microplastics in the plaque of 60% of participants. Those with microplastics had higher inflammation and were 4.5 times more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or die within three years. The study shows correlation — not causation — but raises important questions about how environmental exposure may influence vascular health.
