Hear more of Anoushka Shankar playing the sitar in this video:    • A sitar performance by Anoushka Shankar   The British Museum has been given a sitar that belonged to Pandit Ravi Shankar for 40 years. The sitar has been given to the Museum by his widow, Sukanya Shankar, their daughter Anoushka Shankar, and the Ravi Shankar Foundation. Ravi Shankar is known today as the person, above all others, who introduced Indian music to the world outside the subcontinent. Born in Varanasi, in northern India he spent some of his childhood in London and in Paris, but returned to India to study music with his guru Allauddin Khan. He went on to work as a composer, performed and taught across the world, and played with musicians including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and guitarist George Harrison of The Beatles.
